There are quite a few false teachings about hell; the most common
one is that hell is not eternal that people who do evil will just be destroyed.
Although this teaching may appeal to the human sediment it is not what is
taught in scripture. Jesus made it very clear that hell is eternal suffering in
fire. To make this clear I have included verses from scripture below:
- And shall cast them into a
furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Mat 13:42
- Wherefore if thy hand or thy
foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for
thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or
two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. Mat 18:8
- Then shall he say also unto
them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire,
prepared for the devil and his angels: Mat 25:41
- And if thy hand offend thee,
cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having
two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Mar 9:43
- Where their worm dieth not,
and the fire is not quenched. Mar 9:44
- And the devil that deceived
them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the
false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. Rev 20:10
- But the fearful, and
unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and
sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake
which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Rev 21:8
From those verses it should be clear that hell is eternal. It
mentions eternal and everlasting often. However just incase you missed it I
will add a few more verse that make it even clearer, and explain why I say it
is eternal. Firstly we know that the devil is going to be tormented night and
day for ever and ever note the following scripture: And the devil that
deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and
the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. Rev 20:10 but the same fate awaits those who do
evil Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye
cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: Mat 25:41 added to all of this are all the
verses above where Jesus was referring to people not the devil, and all of
those verses say everlasting fire. But for some unknown reason some people
still teach that hell is just the destroying of the body once, then the person
no longer exists. But that is really a ridiculous doctrine given that the devil
is tormented day and night for ever and it is said that hell is everlasting for
man as well.
One of the strongest evidences for eternal hell, or existence in
hell after death is the following verses from the bible. Which tells the story
of a rich man who ignored the poor, when he died he was sent to hell.
And it came to pass,
that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the
rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in
torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried
and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip
the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this
flame. Luk 16:22-24
It is clear that this story from Jesus is about a man who died and
was sent to hell. Note that he is conscious that he is alive in hell and has
all this human faculties in place. He sees, speaks, etc. He is also said to be
in torment, and he says of himself "I am tormented in this flame", it
is also so dry and painful that he begs for even a drop of water to be given to
him. Again we see in line with all the other scriptures that hell is fire, or
flame, and it is not just for a time it is said to be forever, eternal, day and
night forever and ever.
People are sent to hell if their life style so anger God that he
can no longer stands their behavior that he can no longer dwell with them. God cannot
stand it when people intentionally cause harm to others, he warns them and
tries to turn them from doing evil, but if they persist in causing harm to
others he classes them as not worthy to inherit blessing and he curses them in
his anger, a fire which burns forever.
